SHOWGIRLS will be out in force to mark International Tap Dancing Day on Sunday.

Tap dancers across the state, including Richmond-based Glamour Puss Studios, are set to pay homage to tapping.

Studio head mistress Miss Jane said more than 200 dancers would strut at Southbank on Saturday from noon in the lead-up to the global event.

"When 200 candy-coloured, polka-dotted glamour kittens get together for a soiree, it is a sight more delightful than a plate of fairy bread at a four-year-old's birthday party," Miss Jane said.

Official celebrations will be at Federation Square on Sunday from 10am. May 25 was chosen because it was the birthday of late tap legend Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.
